NSW Silos Photographs
About Us
Born in Sydney 1940. Hal Pratt went to school in Parkes in the Central West of NSW. At the age of six his ambition was to become a landscape painter like his uncle Douglas Pratt but after guidance from his mother settled for a safer career in architecture. Hal pursued this vocation until the mid-nineties when he became disillusioned with the business of architecture with its mounting regulations and paperwork restricting the creative process. Starting anew in photography he moved out of Sydney to Thirroul where he built a darkroom and studio and attended courses on darkroom technique at the Australian Centre for Photography. Each year Hal worked towards a solo exhibition including shows at three regional galleries-Wollongong,Orange and Manly. In 2003 he was contracted by the State Library of NSW to photograph every grain silo across country NSW. An image of each silo facility has been chosen for inclusion in the Library’s archives. Hal Pratt exhibited a selection of the silo photographs at the 2009 Royal Easter Show in association with the annual grain display.
